Melon Varieties Know-How
Hong Kong people often say that Japan is their second home, and Japanese fruits are definitely their favorites. Among them, melons are particularly popular.
Japan has different varieties of melons, and the ones that Hong Kong people are more familiar with include Shizuoka Crown Melon, Hokkaido Rairaiden Melon, and Kumamoto Melon, among others. They can be categorized into red-fleshed and green-fleshed melons. For example, Hokkaido Rairaiden Melon belongs to the red-fleshed variety and is harvested from July to October each year. On the other hand, Shizuoka Crown Melon belongs to the green-fleshed variety and is grown in greenhouses, so they generally have higher prices compared to other varieties.
There is a simple method to quickly check if a melon is ripe. Just gently press the bottom of the melon. If it feels firm, it means it is not yet ripe. If it feels soft when pressed, it means it is ready to be consumed. Another method is to observe the stem end. If the stem is plump, it indicates that the melon is fresher. If the stem end appears dry, it means the melon has been stored for some time and is more likely to be ripe.
